Explainer on Fiber Make-Ready Construction

Explainer on Fiber Make-Ready Construction

At Ethos Broadband, we prioritize building, installing, and maintaining high quality, reliable, and fast fiber internet.

Like any cutting-edge technology, constructing and providing fiber internet to your community and your home is…well…complicated! So getting it right counts—both for reliability, as well as for speed.

But “getting it right” can sometimes take a bit longer than many communities and residents would like!

While we realize that you just “can’t wait” to finally have high-speed fiber internet in your community, we’d like to explain the industry-wide process of installing fiber broadband infrastructure so you will better understand all that goes into providing this service to you—and why we hope you will heed our plea for just a bit more patience to let us get it right!

What is “Fiber Make-Ready Construction”?

Installing fiber internet is subject to strict industry and governmental standards of construction. From planning to permitting, to shovel-ready groundbreaking, to wiring and launching, it’s a step-by-step process to make sure we get it right and limit longer-term problems down the road.

Specifically, when we build the fiber broadband network in your community, we build it to “Fiber Make-Ready” conditions.

“Make-Ready,” a term used broadly in the construction industry, describes the process and standard of building infrastructure to access and connect to a utility access point—in our case, a fiber broadband internet “pole.”

As you can imagine, given the large network of users of this utility (who doesn’t use the internet these days??), the fiber broadband network must be competently and dexterously installed. Fiber Make-Ready is the universal standard Ethos Broadband follows to ensure the highest quality build possible for your internet connection.

Steps in the Fiber Make-Ready Process

Below is the multistep process to getting to Fiber Make-Ready conditions.

Step 1: Ethos Broadband reaches out to the “pole owner” of the fiber—usually another utility—asking permission to connect to the fiber pole. This is a lengthy process involving many governmental regulations, including construction, environmental, financial, labor, and telecommunications regulations.

Step 2: The fiber broadband pole owner runs an engineering and technical assessment on the capacity for that pole to accept more equipment for another connection and whether it can provide sufficient high-speed fiber internet to the Ethos Broadband customer base without additional upgrades. Many factors are considered including safety and basic spacing on the pole.

Step 3: Based on the pole owner’s assessment of capacity, space, safety, and other factors, the pole owner sends a “Fiber Make-Ready” cost estimate to Ethos Broadband. This cost estimate must be pre-paid before any construction work can begin.

Step 4: Once the pole owner concludes that there are no significant issues and has received pre-payment, every other company and provider then sends utility workers to the pole to make adjustments to their existing wiring and equipment on the pole in order to accommodate Ethos Broadband’s new equipment.

Step 5: After space for the new fiber equipment on the pole has been made, the pole owner issues a work permit (which, again, must comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations) to Ethos Broadband.

Step 6: Finally, after all the above steps have been completed, Ethos Broadband can install its fiber equipment on the pole.

Fiber Broadband is Worth the Wait!

We know this seems like a lengthy process. But when you think about it, the steps above help ensure that the internet infrastructure in your community is not overburdened—or unsafe—to bring into your neighborhood. In the long-run, Ethos Broadband’s fiber internet will be more stable, more sustainable, and higher quality because we have taken the time to install it to Fiber Make-Ready conditions.

In sum, installing fiber internet takes some time, and is subject to strict standards of Make-Ready construction. But trust us—it is well worth the wait!

Your internet will be more reliable, more efficient, and much faster because we took the time to install it to the best industry standards.

Where to Find Deals on Cyber Monday

Where to Find Deals on Cyber Monday

The 2021 holiday shopping season is just around the corner—and with global supply chain shortages and delays, online shopping will be more competitive than ever. And the competition for the best 4K TVs, smartphones, tablets, laptops and smart home devices will be red hot.

So when is the best time to find the biggest discounts and sales on the year’s must-have tech—and well in time for them to arrive to be gift-wrapped? On Cyber Monday, which falls on November 29,2021.

Cyber Monday, the annual massive online shopping sale just days after Black Friday, is quite simply the best opportunity of the year to get the cheapest prices on tech and other highly-prized devices and gifts.

Ready to splurge on a Smart Coffeemaker? This is your day. Finally decided to get the Apple Watch? Cyber Monday may be your best bet for a better price. Determined to show off a 65-inch 4k Ultra Smart-TV? Do it Cyber Monday and show off the deal you got, too.

But you won’t be the only one looking for sales, so you’ll have to be attentive and strategic!  Below are some tips for finding and snagging the best deals this Cyber Monday.

Tip #1 Look for Early Cyber Monday Deals

Given the current supply chain issues and the potential for shipping delays, 2021 is a particularly good year to shop early. Fortunately, despite the name, the dramatic discounts don’t have to happen on Cyber Monday itself. Past experience shows that some early deals even pop-up on Thanksgiving Day.  Look for “Flash Sales” on Amazon.com and BestBuy.com, though these retailers typically sell very limited quantities of advertised stock.

Tip #2 Stay Open to Other Brands or Models

Millions of shoppers will be on the hunt for that same ideal TV or Smartphone or Tablet you’ve waited months to buy on sale, so don’t despair if your top brand preference is sold out. Do your research well before Cyber Monday and consider alternative models to buy instead—you may even snag a better deal.

Tip #3 Look Beyond the Big Online Retailers

While Amazon.com, BestBuy.com and Walmart.com usually reign supreme on Cyber Monday, be sure to check out other retailers’ online stores. For example, Staples usually offers excellent deals on laptops and tablets on Cyber Monday.  And if you’re a brand loyalist, don’t forget to search that particular company’s website, too. Dell Computers typically offers its best pricing of the year on Cyber Monday on its site, Dell.com. Likewise, Samsung.com may have the best deal of the year for the Samsung Galaxy Watch.

Yes, you’ll likely have to act fast to find and snatch up great deals on Cyber Monday. But a bit of planning and research upfront, as well as looking beyond the typical online stores for big sales, may reap great rewards and savings this holiday season.

Why You Should Ditch DSL and Cable for Fiber

Why You Should Ditch DSL and Cable for Fiber

Not all internet options are created equal. All it takes is one missed virtual meeting or one lagging video game to realize that your current internet speeds may not be sufficient. If you aren’t happy with your current speeds, you may want to look into other options. But which service is best for you? Let’s explore the speed, reliability, and bandwidth of the three major service delivery options—landline telephone line (DSL), cable TV line (cable), and fiber-optic line (fiber)—to understand why fiber is the clear choice for today’s citizens of the internet.

Internet Speed

Fiber-optic broadband, which uses glass, offers faster internet speeds over greater distances than its copper-based competitors such as DSL and cable. “Fiber to the Home” (FTTH) internet service providers (ISP) boast gigabit-level speeds up into the 100–1,000 Mbps range—several times faster than the maximum offered by its counterparts. Comparatively,DSL speeds max out at about 45 Mbps, while cable hits top speed at 300 Mbps. While that may sound like more than you’ll ever need, the capacity and speed of cable and DSL fluctuate during times of demand, which can leave you lagging when you have a pressing deadline or virtual meeting to attend.

Internet Reliability

Simply put, if reliability is important to you, choose fiber. DSL and cable experience significant slowdowns during peak hours and during extreme weather conditions such as drastic temperature changes and flooding. Fiber alone withstands all of these conditions, including the heave usage of peak hours. Keep in mind that unplanned downtime adds a serious cost to both your productivity and bottom line.

Internet Usage

Don’t make the mistake of underestimating your internet usage. The reality of technology advancements is that most of us are now high-capacity users. How many desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, and gaming systems are competing for bandwidth in your home? Do you stream Netflix or Hulu or videos on YouTube? Do you play video games or games on your phone? Do you have a security system or a video doorbell monitor that requires internet connection to function? What about a home assistant device? Even smart appliances like washers, dryers, and refrigerators usually need an internet connection. As we get more connected, a lightning-fast internet connection becomes increasingly important.
